Enlightened Study

The Enlightened Study is a study space that doubles as a classroom/lecture hall. My main focus in this project was intentionally working with the natural lighting of the site.

The level seen in the picture to the right consists of seating arranged in a lecture style. This lecture hall is intentionally exposing the students to the elements, as nature is known to help with focus. The students would be sitting facing north so no direct sunlight would interrupt the experience, but the walls that surround the space are translucent to allow plenty of light in.

The space underneath the stairs is a study space equipped with seating and tables as seen in the technical drawing above. The walls in the study space are translucent as well but outlined with many little triangles to illuminate the space in a kaleidoscope effect when the sun comes in from the south.

Outside the University Memorial Center at CU Boulder is an open area with seating and a water fountain in the middle. The Enlightened Study sits on top of the water fountain, covering the stairs. If it were to be built, the fountain would be covered up and the fountain removed.
